Saving a dilapidated, 19th century textile factory is ambitious in its own right. Re-purposing it as a celebration of all things artisanal is an even grander project, the vision of Etsy founder Rob Kalin and his team. The plan brings together master crafters in wood, leather, clay, fiber arts, metal and electronics already ensconced in their workshops. In the offing: Apprenticeships for those interested in making a career of “the handmade”, and classes open to the public. Fronting Main Street, a retail store will sell the high-quality, hand-crafted products made on premises, which will also outfit a hotel and restaurant. A magnet for visitors and students, an engine for local growth, Catskill Mill is helping craft a commodity we truly appreciate: a greater sense of community. More here.
